Every diver is different. Some people are just getting started and need extra time to feel comfortable in the water. Others are certified but want to improve their buoyancy, refresh their skills, or feel more confident before their next dive trip. Experienced divers and dive professionals may want focused feedback to improve their skills up to the next level.

Since 1969, Malibu Divers, has offered personalized dive coaching tailored to your experience, goals, and needs. Our approach combines professional instruction, practical skill development, and a safety-first mindset in a supportive and fun learning environment.

Whether you're a beginner, a returning diver, or a dive professional, we'll help you identify what to work on and determine the most appropriate training approach.

Private Freediving Coaching
Technique, body position, finning efficiency, water comfort, and skill development tailored to the freediver's experience and goals.

  • Beginner coaching: Our personalized private coaching gives you the dedicated time and expert attention needed to master core freediving skills at your own comfortable pace. We focus heavily on troubleshooting common hurdles, helping you clear your ears easily, stay calm during the urge to breathe, and nail a smooth, splash-free duck dive. You will also learn to balance your weights perfectly and progress safely into deeper water only when you are completely ready.

  • Certified freediver coaching:  For divers trying to go deeper and longer, advanced coaching for different deep equalization techniques, additional relaxation skills under increasing physical pressure, improving the deep freefall and managing delayed nitrogen narcosis and high CO₂ tolerance when the deep water may make you feel dizzy or foggy, and master advanced safety logistics and gear and manage strict safety plans and rescue protocols.

  • Advanced freediver coaching: for certified freedivers can be specifically designed for underwater hunters wanting to safely extend their bottom time on the reef, self-driven divers looking to extend their personal depth barriers, and ambitious athletes training to safely enter the world of competitive freediving or professional development.

We'll discuss your goals and current experience before recommending a suitable session.
At Malibu Divers, we offer the full range of all PADI Freediver courses- these are our regular courses.

Private Dive Coaching Options

For Beginners

Learning something new can take time. Private coaching provides an opportunity to slow down, ask questions, practice specific skills, and build confidence without feeling rushed.

Sessions can focus on water comfort, basic dive skills, equipment familiarity, weighting and buoyancy fundamentals, or preparation for a certification course.

Private coaching is not a substitute for required certification training. We'll help you determine whether a coaching session or a formal certification course is the best fit for your goals.

Certified Diver Coaching and Refresher Training

Have you been away from diving for a while? Do you feel not as confident as you'd like to be, struggle with buoyancy or clearing your mask, or want to feel more prepared before your next dive vacation?

Private coaching can focus on the skills that matter most to you, including:

  • Refresher practice for divers returning to the water

  • Buoyancy, trim (mastering horizontal position, weight distribution and balanced in the water without tipping or using your hands), and different finning techniques

  • Equipment setup, familiarity, and problem-solving

  • Review and practice of essential freediving or SCUBA skills

  • Confidence building and preparation for your upcoming trip

  • Focused practice on skills that you find challenging

We'll discuss your previous experience and current comfort level before determining the appropriate training environment (pool or ocean) and plan.

Depending on your needs, training may involve a pool session, ocean practice (local beach, shore or boat trip to Catalina, Anacapa, Santa Cruz Islands), or a combination of all of these.

Professional Development for Divemasters and Instructors

Dive professionals will benefit from continuing to practice, refine their skills, and receive constructive feedback.

Private professional coaching may focus on skill demonstrations, teaching techniques, student assessment, problem-solving, and preparation for professional training or evaluation.

As a PADI Course Director, our Director of Education, Barbara Gentile, has over 30 yeas of experience in diver education and professional development to help you. We'll discuss your current certification level, experience, and goals, to determine the most appropriate next step for you.

Formal professional certifications and evaluations must meet the PADI training agency's requirements.

What to Expect

All private coaching starts with a conversation about you and your needs.

We'll discuss your diving background, current certification, previous training, goals, and any concerns you want to address. This helps us determine whether private coaching is appropriate for you, and what type of session would best support your progress.

Depending on your needs, we can discuss:

  • Pool or ocean training (beach, shore, dive boat)

  • Session length and training objectives

  • Equipment availability and rental needs

  • Instructor availability and scheduling

  • Pricing based on your specific requirements

Our goal is to provide useful, individualized instruction—not simply running through a checklist. We'll focus on helping you develop skills, understanding your goals, and confidence in your skills while maintaining required safety standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I book private coaching if I'm new to freediving or scuba diving?

Absolutely. Depending on your experience and goals, we will discuss whether an introductory session, additional practice, or a formal certification course is the best starting point for you.

I'm already certified. Do I need to take the entire course again?

Not necessarily. Depending on your experience, time away from diving, and current skills, a refresher or focused coaching session may be appropriate. We'll discuss your background, goals and help you identify a suitable plan.

Can I work on just one or two skills?

Absolutely. Focused practice is one of the advantages of private instruction. We will discuss the skills you want to improve and determine how best to address them.

Is private coaching the same as a certification course?

No. Coaching focuses on specific goals and skill development. It does not provide a certification or replace required coursework, evaluations, or open-water training. We will discuss which options are appropriate for your situation.

How much does private freediving or scuba coaching cost?

Pricing depends on the type and length of training, pool and/or ocean location, instructor requirements, and equipment needs. Contact us with your goals and experience, and we will discuss the appropriate options and pricing before we meet.

Where does training take place?

The location depends on your goals and the type of training required. Pool sessions, ocean practice (beach, shore or boat), or a combination may be appropriate. We'll discuss the available options when we learn more about your needs.
