ARISTOTLE, EDIBLE & EXTINCTION

Abalone are sea snails and mentioned in history since Aristotle (400 BC). Once called “sea ears” because of its single shell and ear shape, it has withstood the test of time until being overfished to near depletion. The western coast of North America is home to over 7 species. Abalone became a very popular food choice by many cultures and its easy access, helped to quickly deplete it’s resources. Their inner, iridescent shells are beautiful, highly prized and used as decorations, jewelry, fashion and more. With slow growth and breeding challenges, abalone re-population has not kept up. Several species are list as endangered. Yet, they are still found in our oceans worldwide thanks to conservation efforts enacted, and the rapidly growing abalone farm industry. Demand is at an all time high. Natural restoration efforts hold great promise, but still need our protection and support.
   
During this course, learn about the different abalone species, their anatomy, life cycle, identification, local residents, environmental importance, conservation efforts, and health. Diving for abalone is an exciting activity with your buddy finding these treasured animals in nature is unique opportunity to raise awareness. You will count and identify them and measure their size taking care to not disturb them. Additionally, you will record their location and then locate them again on the next dive.

Pre-requisite: PADI (or equivalent) Open Water and minimum of 10 years old.

RELEASES: You will be emailed all additional information including releases. Follow all the directions and fill them out completely and bring them with you.  Any questions or need more information - contact us.

What is considered deep recreational diving?
Diving beyond 60 feet up and potentially up to 130 feet.
Scuba divers like to be free to dive as deep as we need to be. Some divers like to explore what is usually beyond where most aquatic life lives. Some wreck dives and wall dives seem to just call us deeper and deeper. Here in lies the issue. What is deep and why should we be trained to go deeper? Probably the most important point, what's it like to go deep and what kind of training is required to go deep diving.

Minimum age: 15 years old

Note: we include your educational materials (manual) and your certification card with 1-4 training dives depending on your program.  Travel expenses are not included.  Deep dives are best from Catalina shore or from one of our dive boat trips. Choose date(s) that are best for you or when we are conducting weekend ocean dives in Catalina or are diving from a boat.  Deep dives require you to have experience and mastery of neutral buoyancy before attempting a deep dive. Maximum of 3 training dives per day.

Do you want to make a difference on every dive but are not sure where to begin? Gain the knowledge and skills to activate your inner citizen scientist by taking the Dive Against Debris® Specialty. You'll learn to complete Dive Against Debris surveys under the guidance of a PADI® Professional and help keep you your local dive sites healthier by removing trash.

Your training starts in the classroom by learning:

  • About marine debris, the damage done, what it is, where it comes from and how divers are part of the solution.
  • How to establish a Dive Against Debris® survey, the survey frequency, sites, profiles and equipment. Also the use of photography and knowing what to leave behind.
  • How to make your survey count. The five easy steps to report the debris you've removed to maximize each survey's benefits.
  • How to join the global Project AWARE movement of scuba divers protecting our ocean planet.

During your one open water dive, you will conduct a Dive Against Debris® survey, including weighing, sorting, recording, disposing and reporting your marine debris to Project AWARE.

GO WITH THE FLOW & FLY UNDERWATER

Drift Diving is one of the most popular things to do when diving at locations around the world, especially in places that have strong currents like Cozumel, Mexico, Palau, New Zealand, Galapagos, United Kingdom. (In southern California and Los Angeles, we do drift dive but it depends more on the boat we use.)

Drift diving can be relaxing and exhilarating. The course teaches you how to enjoy going with the flow as you scuba dive along reefs and use ocean (even river) currents to glide along.
To get the most out of your drift diving there are a few simple rules and skills to share with you.
  
Thus, the goal of this course is to teach you as divers a systematic, methodical approach to drift diving, with an overview of regional and situational variables in the techniques used. You will develop the techniques involved in drift diving within recreational limits in a local drift diving environment.
 
Minimum age: 10 years old
 

Note: we include your educational materials and your certification card with 1-2 training dives depending on your program.  Travel expenses are not included.  Training dives are best from Catalina shore or from one of our dive boat trips but can be from our Malibu beaches (you need to be experienced beach diver) Choose date(s) that are best for you or when we are conducting weekend ocean dives in Catalina or are diving from a boat or the beach.  Dives are best when you have experience and mastery of neutral buoyancy before attempting a drift dive.
