Delayed Surface Marker Buoy Specialty

The Delayed Surface Marker Buoy (DSMB) course is an essential training program for divers looking to enhance their safety skills and preparedness in the water. In this course, you will learn the critical techniques for properly deploying and managing a DSMB, a crucial piece of safety equipment used by divers worldwide. The course covers various scenarios, including deploying a DSMB from depth, managing the line during ascent, and using the buoy to signal your location to surface vessels and other divers.

Throughout the training, you'll gain hands-on experience with different types of DSMBs and reels, ensuring you understand their functions and how to handle them effectively in various conditions. You'll also learn about the importance of a DSMB in current-prone dive sites, how to use it for completing safety stops, and the best practices for maintaining visibility and communication with your dive group.

Understanding and mastering DSMB deployment is vital because boats and currents are common factors at many dive sites. Boaters may not always be aware of divers below, and currents can carry you farther than expected. A DSMB acts as a visual signal, alerting others to your presence and adding a layer of safety during your ascent. Pre-requisite: PADI (or equivalent) Open Water and minimum of 12 years old.
